Ethical Porn vs Traditional Porn: Why the Industry Needed to Change

For decades, pornography was built around one thing: selling fantasy. Unfortunately, that often came at the expense of the people creating it.

Traditional porn has long been criticised for poor working conditions, unfair pay, a lack of performer control, and content designed primarily through the male gaze. While not every production company operated this way, the industry developed a reputation for exploiting performers rather than empowering them. It became increasingly clear that the industry needed regulation, transparency, and a complete shift in how performers were treated.

That's where ethical porn was born.

Ethical porn puts consent, fair pay, performer wellbeing and creative control at the centre of production. Directors like Erika Lust helped redefine what adult entertainment could look like by prioritising authentic pleasure, diverse bodies, clear boundaries and respectful working environments. Instead of performers simply being hired to fulfil someone else's vision, ethical porn gives them a voice in what is created.

Today, platforms like OnlyFans have taken that idea even further.

Rather than working for a studio, creators choose exactly what they make, who they work with, how much they charge and what they're comfortable sharing. They own their audience, keep a much larger share of the income, and can build an entire business around their own boundaries. For many women, that's not just a better business model—it's a safer and more empowering one.

That's why we see OnlyFans as a form of ethical porn. It's built on autonomy, consent, ownership and creator control, allowing women to profit from their own content instead of someone else's.

Of course, the conversation doesn't end there. With the rise of OnlyFans management agencies, some creators are once again handing over control of their businesses—and perhaps even their autonomy. But we'll save that for another blog.

One of the leading industry creators of ethical porn is Erika Lust. Check out her films here.
